A big, old house that could use more than a little re-invigorating? A budget that’s far less than what’s probably needed? Two people with demanding, high-stress positions that entail lots of travel? Two young children who they’d rather be playing with than dragging around to look at paint chips and furniture? No wonder so many people are anxiously waiting to see what the Obamas will do with their new home. They’re a lot like most of us – but with 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 6 levels, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators – on a slightly grander scale.
They’ve chosen an excellent designer in Michael S. Smith, who’ll no doubt put his talent blending European traditionalism and American modernism to work. But like most other humans, deep down, they’ll want their personal space to be a source of comfort and a reflection of who they are. And if the campaign was any indication, the new president will want to establish a certain style that is in sync with the substance of his core message.
